About

London Athenians Toastmasters Club launched in 1994 and has been running ever since, without interruption. We currently run our meetings on the first floor of The Hop Poles pub on King Street in Hammersmith. We have over fifty members, coming from very diverse multinational backgrounds and have a reputation for being one of the most welcoming and friendly clubs in London. If this sounds appealing and you’d like to drop in to see for yourself, we’d love to meet you.

London Athenians is one of the few London clubs that meets every week, giving our members double the opportunities to practice their speaking and leadership skills, while paying similar membership fees (£11/month) as clubs that meet every fortnight. Membership subscriptions are paid on a 6-month basis.

Once you become a member of our club, you can work on developing the following skills:

  • Follow a speaking pathway  - check out the pathways system to see which path suits you.

  • Impromptu speaking – half of our meetings are dedicated to impromptu speaking (Table Topics).

  • Listening skills - through evaluating other speakers or roles.

  • Leadership skills - there are 11/55 members running the club.

  • Try the functionaries’ roles: Timekeeper, Grammarian, Toastmaster, Chairperson, Sergeant at Arms.

  • Speak to an audience - the best thing in Toastmasters is that it provides the public - you get evaluated, voted for, and receive constant feedback from the listeners.

  • Mentoring – once a member, you are being assigned to a mentor of your choice. Your initial mentor will be with you for a duration of 4 weeks before you are in turn assigned another mentor for another 4-week period. This rotation will continue or if you connect with a mentor, you can ask for them on a more permanent basis

  • Speaking and evaluating competitions – we organize two competitions per year for our members. The winners are invited to take part in further competitions within Toastmasters.
